Can Retirees Access Tuition Support?

Older adults may qualify for Fee-Free TAFE or state-funded training support. Retirement alone does not entitle you to a funded place; you still need to meet funding eligibility and course entry requirements.

Check:

Your residency and citizenship or visa status.
Whether the course is on the funded course list.
Your previous participation in funded training.
Any rules about current study or employment.
Whether funded places remain available for your chosen intake.

For example, eligible Queensland applicants can enrol regardless of their employment status or previous qualifications. However, the programme generally limits learners to one funded qualification, with specific exceptions.

What Should You Check in 2026?

In Queensland, Fee-Free TAFE has been extended until 31 December 2026. This date applies to Queensland’s programme; check the funding arrangements in your own state or territory.

Choosing a Course That Matches Your Needs

When exploring TAFE online courses for seniors, start with what you want to be able to do after completing your studies.

Building Confidence With Technology

If your goal is to send emails, make video calls or use online services, Be Connected can be a starting point. It supports digital skills for Australians aged over 50, operates separately from TAFE and does not award TAFE qualifications. Once you feel comfortable with everyday tasks, you can explore suitable digital skills courses.

Developing a Personal Interest

TAFE short courses in photography or photo editing are options to explore. For example, TAFE NSW offers Introduction to Digital Photography; check the delivery mode, as photography courses may require campus attendance. If you already use Photoshop confidently, you could consider its online AI Capabilities Using Photoshop course. Hobby courses are not automatically tuition-free.

Preparing for Office Work

Certificate III in Business (Administration) — BSB30120 is an option to explore if you want to develop administrative skills. TAFE Queensland offers an online self-directed option with an average duration of up to two years, studying up to two units per 12-week intake. Ask about the software you will need and the funding that may apply to you.

Developing Bookkeeping Skills

A Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping online — FNS40222 is an option to explore if you want to develop accounting and bookkeeping skills. TAFE Queensland offers an online self-directed option with an average duration of 17 months, studying up to two units per 12-week intake. Check computer requirements, online assessment arrangements and funding eligibility.

Before choosing, ask: “How many hours will I need each week, will I have to attend campus, and what support is available if I need help?”

Does Online Study Mean Learning Entirely From Home?

Delivery options may include:

Online self-paced: arrange your study hours within the course’s deadlines.
Virtual classroom: attend live online classes at scheduled times.
Blended learning: combine online study with campus or workplace activities.

Some courses require practical training, in-person assessments or work placements. This is particularly important to check for care, health and trade courses.

Ask about weekly study hours, assessment deadlines, campus attendance and access to teachers or support staff. Online learners still need to meet course completion requirements.

What Costs Should You Budget for Beyond Tuition?

Fee-Free TAFE may cover tuition for eligible learners, but related expenses can still arise:

A computer, internet access and software.
Learning materials, equipment or uniforms.
Travel and requirements associated with work placements.

Before accepting an offer, ask the provider to confirm what funding covers and what you must pay. If you hold a concession card, check whether it is accepted under the programme you are considering.

How to Check Your Options and Apply

Find the course on the official TAFE website or your state’s training portal.
Check the course code, delivery mode, intake and entry requirements.
Ask the provider to confirm funding eligibility and total costs.
Prepare identification, residency evidence and relevant qualifications if requested.
Create or retrieve your Unique Student Identifier — USI, which is generally required for nationally recognised VET training.
Complete the application and any required entry assessments, then read the offer before accepting it.

For information only. Eligibility, fees and funded places may change. Confirm current details directly with the provider before enrolling.
